The Controversial Legacy of Otto Waalkes’ “Otto Show”: Comedy, Discrimination, and Changing Moral Concepts

Otto Waalkes’ “Otto Show” from the 70s and 80s was warned by the German public broadcaster – because jokes show “discriminatory language and attitude”. Waalkes is now commenting on this approach.

Several editions of the “Otto Show” from the 70s and 80s can be found in the media library of the German public broadcaster WDR. However, a “warning notice” can be seen and heard before the broadcast by comedian Otto Waalkes. The program contains passages, “which are now considered discriminatory“, reads the overlay.

Waalkes commented on the warnings for the first time on Thursday evening to the German newspaper “Bild”: “As if there were no problems other than old Otto jokes.”

“I was kidding”

The programs were half a century ago, since then moral concepts have changed, says Waalkes. “There’s always something offensive about comedy, because it violates everyday rules. I was a student at the time and made jokes that particularly offended authorities.”

The warning does not indicate which passages the WDR classifies as discriminatory. In the “Otto Show 2” the comedian jokes about an “old Chinese love song”. “The piece is called Ping-Pong. The woman embodies the cosmic principle of the ping, while the man takes hold of the pong,” says Waalkes.
