The controversial announcement by the rector of the UCAB regarding the opposition

This Saturday, the rector of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB), Arturo Peraza, issued statements through the VPI Channel about the role of the Venezuelan opposition, which became the center of controversy on social media.

During an interview, Peraza said that, based on the “zero-sum game we are in, where I win or lose, we will probably have no other way out than through confrontation.”

“One would hope that in Venezuela we can come to an understanding based on dialogue… That is a fundamental issue to understand the political context of the country, because in the zero-sum game we are in, where I win or I lose… We will probably only have a solution through confrontation,” he said in the interview.

According to the rector of UCAB, “we have already tried this path in other times in the country and it did not have good results, it had terrible results, results that we are seeing repeated, a government that is closed in on itself, incapable of facing the situation of change within the country.”

“On the other hand, there is also the opposition, with legitimate claims, but without the capacity to articulate an alternative or an option that can give viability to a political governance scheme, in a highly complicated country scheme,” said Peraza.

The highest authority of the UCAB believes that the negotiation process “should have taken place before the elections, it did not happen, it was one of the things I called for in that direction, because I understood that a political process is not only an electoral process, but that you need a basis for social and political agreements between the forces in conflict.”
