As the elections (PASO, general) approach, the importance for citizens of having non-governmental organizations dedicated to verifying the accuracy (or not) of the data, statements, information provided by political parties, alliances and candidates: fact checking are the terms that define the function of these institutions, journalistic or parajournalistic, which also serve as sources for the conventional media (graphics, television, radio, news portals on the Internet) and social networks.
There are dozens of these organizations around the world. In Argentina, for years the site chequeado.com has efficiently fulfilled this function, which regularly publishes the results of its investigations, which make it possible to identify false or misleading news and the contents of statements by public figures or government or corporate bodies.
A recently published study by Chequeado takes a look at the proposals of the main pre-candidates. Its extension does not allow it to be reproduced in this column, but it is worth consulting it in
At the same time, the Chequeado team analyzes recent statements by people linked to the elections and ranks them according to their veracity. Some cases:
Juan Grabois, a candidate for Union for the Homeland, stated that only 40 percent of Argentine households have natural gas. By the way, insufficient number. Although Checked estimated that the data is true, it is necessary to indicate that it is lower than the real figure, according to the census, which rises to 51 percent.
The Minister of Economy and candidate for Unión por la Patria assured in a recent act that so far in 2023 the National Treasury has not transferred any funds to Aerolíneas Argentinas, when questioning statements related to the company’s deficit. It is, in Chequeado’s opinion, misleading information, because there is a commitment to contribute (as “accrued credit”) 22,500 million pesos out of a total budget of 90 billion.
Checked estimated that it is exaggerated that one in three formal employees is poor, as stated by the presidential candidate for Together for Change, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. The figure is estimated between 13.9 and 19.3 percent living in poor households.
The vice-presidential candidate seconding Sergio Massa on his list, Agustín Rossi, stated that a quarter of the workers are monotributistas. “Exaggerated” qualified Checked. According to the institution, Rossi did not take into account to indicate that percentage the almost eight million unregistered workers. With this clarification, it is estimated that 13.3 percent of the total are monotributistas and not 25 percent of the workforce.
Since 2014, Chequeado has coordinated the network of checkers LatamChequea, which brings together more than thirty organizations from 17 countries in Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Its objective and practice aim to counteract the misinformation that circulates and transcends borders. By the way, the task is not simple, as might be seen during the time in which the pandemic was a target to be attacked by the creators of false, misleading or biased news, often originating from deniers of the validity of the vaccines or the effectiveness of the treatments. The contributions of the check-up organizations during the electoral processes in the United States and Brazil were also important.
