the Consumer Price Index increased by 3.1% in January 2022

CThis increase is the result of the rise in the index of food products by 4.3% and that of non-food products by 2.3%, explains the HCP in an information note relating to the CPI for the month of January 2022 For non-food products, the variations range from a drop of 0.2% in communication to a rise of 5.9% in transport, adds the same source.

Compared to December 2021, the CPI stagnated during January 2022, resulting from the fall of 0.1% in the index of food products and the rise of 0.1% in the index non-food products.

The increases in food products observed between December 2021 and January 2022 mainly concern bread and cereals (1.9%), oils and fats (0.8%) and mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (0.3%), notes the HCP, noting that, on the other hand, prices fell by 4.4% for vegetables, 0.6% for meat and 0.5% for fruit.

For non-food products, the increase mainly concerned the prices of tobacco (3.5%) and fuel (1.1%).

CPI increases were recorded in Casablanca with 0.5%, in Kenitra with 0.4%, in Agadir and Tetouan with 0.2% and in Rabat, Tangier, Laâyoune and Errachidia with 0.1%, while that the most significant decreases were recorded in Safi with 1.2%, in Beni-Mellal with 0.7% and in Fez and Marrakech with 0.4%, notes the HCP.

Under these conditions, the core inflation indicator, which excludes products at volatile prices and products at public prices, would have increased by 0.3% in January 2022 compared to December. 2021 and 3.2% compared to January 2021.
