The construction of the memorial museum of the victims of the boat Joola is almost complete. The infrastructure should be delivered at the end of July.

ZIGUINCHOR – A little over two months before the commemoration of the sinking of the ship Joola, the Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage, Aliou Sow, proceeded, on Thursday July 13, to the visit of the construction site of the memorial museum on the bank of the Casamance river. Satisfied with the level of execution, he said: “Today what we see here is impressive. I am happy to note that all the instructions given were taken care of in the best possible way”. Having visited practically all the different levels of the building, the Minister of Culture magnified “the museographic quality of the building, the didactics of the discourse”. Aliou Sow believes that following these emotions experienced, there needs to be a “new life built on the basis of lessons learned from the experience of misadventure”. But also, underlines the guardianship, from the creative genius of Senegal and the resilience of the Senegalese people and the region of Casamance. The families of the victims, the survivors accompanied us with a lot of pedagogy.
Present with some members of the association of families of victims and survivors of Joola, Élie Jean Bernard Diatta, the legal affairs officer of the said association, said he was satisfied with the outcome of this project. “The memorial is one of the points of claim of our collective. It is a memorial museum divided into two parts. One for the memory of the victims, another for the relics. It is a building of capital importance; because it is a place where we will find life once more, ”he said.
The status of memorial was the subject of an advisability study. “The decree on the statute, creation and setting the rules of operation and organization will be signed as soon as possible”, confirmed the Minister of Culture who wishes that “this great cultural infrastructure, a major place of pilgrimage and remembrance, be inaugurated by the Head of State, Macky Sall, on September 26th”.

He signed, “Wednesday, July 12, during the Council of Ministers, the decree creating the fund for the development of urban cultures with an endowment of 2,000,000,000 CFA francs”, announced Mr. Aliou Sow.
