The main construction and real estate employers’ federations are calling on Emmanuel Macron, in an open letter published Monday by The Parisian, an “electroshock” to revive the production of new housing. “When will the State take the real measure of the risk of an economic, social and societal bomb that the crisis of the ‘power to live’ that our fellow citizens are facing?” ask the presidents of six federations (FFB , Pôle Habitat, Fnaim, FPI, Unis, Procivis).

“An electric shock is essential: immediately applicable and powerful measures are necessary to prevent this crisis from worsening further”, they write. The pace of new housing construction has plummeted in recent months, a victim of rising construction costs and difficult access to credit. The Housing component of the National Council for Refoundation (CNR), supposed to respond to these issues, was to deliver its much-awaited conclusions on May 9, but the restitution was postponed for a month, “due to a constraint of agenda” according to the ministry, prompting angry comments.

“System of public overspending”

Emmanuel Macron’s statements in an interview with Challenges, where he called for a “conference of parties” to respond to the housing crisis and castigated “a system of public overspending for collective inefficiency”, also made several actors jump. “We are now no longer expecting yet another consultation, but the expression of a clear and ambitious presidential will as well as quantified measures, a rapid implementation schedule and financial means adapted to the challenges”, answer the professional federations.

“Your government knows the proposals of the professionals we represent to meet the still strong demand from households and restore their real estate purchasing power. It knows what levers to activate, particularly in support of communities, to boost the supply of housing and , beyond public funding linked to the emergency, we need banking solutions”, they continue.
