The Minister for the Environment, Isaura Navarroreaffirmed this week the commitment of the Generalitat to make the protection of the Romeu mountain a reality as a municipal natural area, after the first attempt was buried by the courts. In a matter where The historical demands to shield this “green lung” and the interests of the Holcim cement company collide which operates the adjoining quarry of Salt del Llop, Navarro pointed out that this file seeks to protect the mountain and “fight against the climate emergency that we are experiencing”, so that the Ministry has already restarted the procedures so that “from now on” the emblematic mountain of Sagunt has this figure of protection: “We trust that we can complete the process as quickly as possible and that the Sagunt Town Hall can invest in caring for the mountain and ensuring its good condition so that the entire population of the city can enjoy this spectacular place that undoubtedly constitutes a green lung of great value for the municipality and the entire region”, affirmed the minister.

Some statements he made Navarro during the visit to the mountain of Romeu de Sagunt, this Thursday, April 13, an area for which, from the City Council, has once again requested the start of the process for its declaration as a Municipal Natural Area in order to protect and regulate the use of this green lung of the city.

The Minister has been accompanied at all times by Pepe Gil, councilor for Compromís in the Sagunt City Council, who stresses that “it is essential for all of us to have a protected area so that no one can do harm to it and also, the city council can allocate resources to maintain the Romeu mountain andn good conditions”. Some statements with which the person in charge of the Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana showed her agreement: “It is essential that the mountain of Romeu is protected under the figure of Municipal Natural Park.”

Gil stressed that “you have to remember that the start of the procedure shields the mountain again for the next three years, at which time the site will be officially declared. We demand that the Department of the Environment directed by the mayor Darío Moreno takes the utmost interest in the favorable evolution of this procedure. We are concerned that the site’s governing council is not active and 0 resources have been allocated. We think that up to now the mayor, as councilor delegate for the Environment, has shown zero interest in the protection of the Romeu mountain”.

The visit was also attended by several councilors from the nationalist formation of the Sagunt City Council such as Asun Moll, Maria Josep Soriano and José Manuel Tarazona
