At first glance, the Suunto Vertical seems like a perfectly normal smartwatch. Her design round and the buttons on the side of the bezel give it a sporty look. Its silicone strap provides a some comfort. And it’s nice to know that he’s interchangeable if you wish to wear another color on the wrist.

The Vertical comes in two versions. There is Titanium Solar and Stainless Steel. Each of these versions has 4 strap colors. As its name suggests, the Titanium Solar is equipped with a titanium bezel and a solar charging system. And the Stainless Steel has a bezel stainless steel.

The Suunto Vertical is also equipped with a offline mapping, which we used during the test. This is one of the key points that the brand has put forward because it is free. Simply download plans you need in the storage space of the smartwatch. And you can consult these maps when needed. This helped us out a lot on our last outing in the mountains.

Good battery life

Statistically speaking, the Titanium Solar version is amazing. Compared to a smartwatch VERTIX 2 choirs which offers 140 hours of continuous multi-satellite tracking, or one month of regular GPS use. The smartwatch is not a loser.

During our test of the Suunto Vertical, we were able to do two weeks of walks. We also did a bit of GPS tracked running and biking. But the smartwatch was still at 73% following all these activities. It’s impressive. The solar version provides regarding 30% more energy in sunny weather apparently.

The battery life itself is already excellent, but the numbers for the solar model are really insane. In daily use mode without heart rate monitoring, it lasts 60 days. And if you activate this function, it lasts 30 days. Then, running the Training Mode (Tour), it lasts approximately 20 days. And in Training Mode (Performance) it lasts 2 and a half days (or 85 hours with solar energy collection).

A good GPS

And at Suunto 9 Peak Pro has always been quite precise in terms of positioning and of tracking constants of its carrier. There Suunto Vertical is innovative because it uses a dual-band GNSS system. This significantly improves the speed and accuracy of the data collected.

During our test, we directly activated this option when leaving our home and our Suunto Vertical spotted us directly. It is one of the rare digital knockers capable of clearly define which side of the road the wearer is on. Previous models, including the 9 Peak Pro, sometimes had to take more than 2 minutes to display location information. We still had to wait for the surrounding satellites to spot the connected watch.

And the Suunto Vertical has a good plotter. It is possible to make long journeys by wearing it on the wrist, it is able to retrace your journey. You can retrace your steps with it. This way you won’t get lost.

An easy-to-understand interface

Suunto has also made practical changes to the interface that we note on the Vertical. It is just as easy to handle as an Apple Watch. The Finnish brand has indeed set out to simplify its use. In addition to the touchscreen, the smartwatch has three physical buttons. Up is up, down is down, middle is selection.

For example, by pressing the button located bottom right side, you will access different functions and tools. These are in particular the maps, compass option, log, media controls, stopwatch, alarms, flashlight and other parameters.

Then, the touch screen interface is also satisfactory. During our test of the Suunto Vertical, we appreciated being able to navigate from one widget to another with a single swipe right. Otherwise, this operation can only be done by a long press of the middle button, although it is slightly slower.

L’application Suunto

To follow, the Vertical is also equipped with the brand’s flagship application. This is the app “Suunto”. It allows you to plan, analyze and share your sports activities. And many other applications revolve around it. Sports enthusiasts can, for example, use OS Maps or Strava. And music lovers can connect to Spotify through their smartwatch.

The application is very pleasant to use. Especially if you like importing or exporting files to storage and from other platforms. It also offers great previews of your routes.

Top recovery apps

Then, the Suunto Vertical also comes with top-notch recovery apps. People in front often follow their constants can rely on this connected watch. She picks up very well how many calories you burned during a given period. This makes it easier to set weight loss goals. And this smartwatch is able to measure your heart rate during your daily activities.

Moreover, as we had wanted to know our sleeping habits. Our test of the Suunto Vertical allowed us to understand a lot of things. The smartwatch is also able to count how many hours we slept. Like the Fitbits, it breaks down rest times into phases. Therefore we might see at what time of the night we entered into a state of deep, REM or light sleep. Then, in the morning, it automatically records what times the wearer wakes up.

A quality smartwatch

The Suunto Vertical is manufactured in the factory located in the city of Vantaa in Finland like the other products of the brand. And the standards followed during its manufacture are numerous. It is indeed a connected watch of certified military quality (MIL-STD-810H).

You know water resistance is great, since it is possible to take it on diving sessions at more than 100 meters deep. It will always work.

Combining the know-how of Suunto’s teams and valuable materials, the prix Of the version Titanium Solar approximate significantly from that ofApple Watch Ultra. But this smartwatch the far surpasses in many areas.

Although its weight of 74 g can sometimes be a problem, especially for people with small wrists, it is not insurmountable. In our test, comparing the weight of the Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar to that of other connected watches, the smartwatch holds its own. Indeed, if we consider that a Garmin fenix 7 Solar weighs 75 g. And a watch VERTIX 2 choirs weighs 87 g. The mass of the solar-charged Suunto Vertical is completely normal.

Verdict

This is an extremely impressive smartwatch that truly rivals the Apple Watch Ultra, the Garmin fenix 7 line and the Coros VERTIX 2 in every way. Of battery life to the easy to use interfacethe Suunto Vertical Stainless Steel or Titanium Solar are exceptional.

And its design is just as beautiful as that of the Suunto 9 Peak Pro. Its circular roundness is remarkable. And the data is displayed very well on its screen of 1.4 inches. By scrolling on it, the information scrolls clearly. And the solidity of this model is no longer a subject to be debated. In the world of smartwatches, the Suunto Vertical is a small titan that can perfectly compete with other outdoor connected watches.

But since any product purchase is a matter of choice, we cannot position ourselves for you. Our test of the Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar version was conclusive. But it may turn out that the Finnish brand can still surprise us in the future.

  • Very good autonomy of 60 days (Titanium Solar version)
  • Very good GPS and offline mode mapping option
  • Quite heavy for small wrists
  • High price
