In a press release published on Tuesday, the Minister of Transport, Merchant Navy and the Sea, Dieudonné Loïc Ndinga Moudouma, recalled the terms of the decree taken since February 2000, establishing the regulation of the profession of taxi driver in the Gabonese Republic.
According to this decree, supplemented and clarified by the provisions of the orders taken in July 2000 and January 2001, respectively setting the conditions for exercising the profession of taxi driver and the organization of aptitude tests for the profession of driver, to be a taxi driver in the Gabonese Republic, one must be at least 21 years old and at most 60 years old.
Among other conditions, hold a valid category B and D driving license; have passed the taxi driving aptitude tests and have a taxi driver card issued by the Minister of Transport. Registration for the taxi driver aptitude tests will begin on Tuesday, July 30, at the Galeries Tsika premises, which adjoin the Institut français Saint Exupéry in downtown Libreville, according to the said press release.
According to numerous sources generally well-informed in the ministry responsible for transport, speaking on condition of anonymity, the reminder of the provisions listed above reflects “the desire of the transitional authorities to interest a large majority of nationals in this profession, three-quarters of which is practiced by expatriates, mainly of Cameroonian, Beninese and Nigerian origin, due to lack of reliable statisticss”, the same sources say.
On a platform with our colleagues from the continuous news television channel, Gabon 24, housed within the presidency of the Gabonese Republic, the Special Advisor, Spokesperson for the President of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, announced on Wednesday the purchase and imminent arrival, on the instructions of the President of the Transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, of no less than four hundred (400) vehicles for use as taxis, intended to be transferred under conditions to young Gabonese people.
Through this initiative and through announcements of grants and large-scale recruitments made in recent weeks, both in the public sector and in private administrations, the transitional authorities intend to curb, as much as possible, the phenomenon of endemic unemployment, particularly among young people.
