The state of health of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is causing serious concern within the Algerian regime. Aged 77 and having suffered severe complications from covid-19, his physical abilities and ability to govern are subject to several questions as he plans to run for a second term in 2024.

The Algerian president sees his state of health deteriorating ostensibly, especially following recent prolonged trips abroad.

Concerns are growing around his ability to govern Algeria as he appears to be suffering from chronic fatigue. His recent prolonged trips abroad, notably to Russia and China, imposed by the generals of the junta, have exacerbated the consequences of his long recovery from the covid-19 infection, weakening his metabolism.

According to information from Maghreb Intelligence, Tebboune has planned to submit soon to a new series of medical checks in specialized establishments in Germany.

Senior officials from the Algerian and German secret services are due to meet on August 8 in Berlin to further discuss the president’s state of health, it is said.

The Algerian delegation will thus be led by Major General Djebbar M’henna, head of the Algerian foreign intelligence services, who will meet his counterparts from the German foreign intelligence services, the BND, in the German capital.

The objective of this meeting being to review in detail the medical report of the 77-year-old president and to carry out a new in-depth examination in anticipation of the strategic political deadlines to come, namely the presidential elections of 2024, affirms the portal.

However, the Algerian regime does not seem to be optimistic regarding his physical abilities, especially following the dramatic episode in the midst of a pandemic which led him to go into exile for several months abroad to receive treatment.

No more details were given on the nature of his illness and his observed weakening following several trips abroad, but it seems to be a highly contagious virus which is currently spreading in Algeria.

At the beginning of this week, the Algerian Ministry of Health announced the appearance of cases of diphtheria in the southern regions, a respiratory infection that induces damage to the central nervous system, throat or other organs, leading to death by asphyxiation.

According to the statement, urgent measures have been taken by local health authorities to prevent the spread of the disease. A total of 80 cases have already been recorded, including 16 confirmed cases requiring the launch of a vaccination and awareness campaign targeting the most affected neighborhoods and contact cases.
