Renault’s CEO is out of his mind. He believes that the end of sales of cars equipped with internal combustion engines should be postponed until at least 2040. Luca De Meo, CEO of Renault, has also been the president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) since the beginning of this year. The head of the car manufacturer made serious statements regarding how the future of the sector is being handled in Brussels. In his opinion, banning the sale of cars with internal combustion engines is a completely absurd idea. De Meo made specific accusations once morest the EU Commission, stating “There is a group in Brussels that supports electric extremism and does not realize – or does not want to realize – that the future is much more complex than this.” The CEO also admitted his own guilt for not being brave enough to talk regarding alternatives to electricity, explaining how e-fuels, for example, might be made available immediately. De Meo claimed that his predecessor at the helm of ACEA did not have the strength, will and courage to take a firm stand in the ideological process launched by EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmmermans for climate change, who recently announced the launch of the for the post of Dutch Prime Minister. De Meo emphasized that European decision-makers “must not limit themselves to a snapshot of the future, but must watch the entire video: this is the only way to understand what path new technologies must take in the coming years.” The head of Renault fears that the EU will soon face insurmountable difficulties if it does not change its vision. He then added: “Beijing owns the lion’s share of the world market for electric cars, because rare earth metals, cobalt and other elements needed to build batteries are in its hands. Even the costs of energy production are different because in Europe the standards have to be environmentally friendly, while in China they still use coal, there are no pollution limits and labor costs are lower. The result? Here, electric cars are for the rich.” In De Meo’s opinion, the ban on internal combustion engines should be postponed until at least 2040. He believes that there is no turning back from the electric transition, as European manufacturers have invested billions in technology in recent years, but at the same time, there is always a need for a B-plan. According to the businessman, the market always has the last word, so he believes that some kind of positive change may occur in the near future.
