The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, together with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Friedriksen and the Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, promoted an informal meeting between some of the member states most interested in the migration dossier and in particular in the topic of innovative solutions. In addition to Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands and the European Commission, the leaders of Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary took part in the meeting. In particular, President Ursula von der Leyen illustrated the main lines of work indicated in last Monday’s Letter on migration, including on the topic of “innovative solutions”.
President Meloni presented the Italy-Albania agreement, following the arrival of the first irregular migrants in the port of Shengjin, underlining their role in the fight against human traffickers. The discussion between leaders focused on the concept of a safe third country in view of the implementation of the rules of the new Migration and Asylum Pact, on collaboration along the migratory routes with UNHCR and IOM regarding assisted voluntary repatriations as well as on “return hubs”.
The leaders present, recalls a note from Palazzo Chigi, agreed to continue to maintain a close operational connection, also in view of the next European Councils, with the aim of strengthening and making the European Union’s migration policy increasingly effective.
