After Moscow achieved territorial gains for the first time in almost a year, Ukraine defends 1 thousand. kilometer-long front line in the east and south.
O. Syrskis indicated that he visited two brigades, “in which the situation is gradually becoming more complicated and there is a threat that enemy units may move deeper into our combat formations.”
Ukraine is currently facing troop and ammunition shortages, Western aid is stalling and internal debate over how to bring in more troops as the full-scale war enters its third year.
“In general, the operational situation on the eastern front remains difficult. The enemy continues to carry out offensive actions”, said O. Syrskis on the Telegram social network, stating that Russian forces are conducting an attack in several areas of the Donetsk region.
“At the same time, probably due to heavy losses, enemy activity in other areas of the front has dropped significantly,” he added, without elaborating.
In an interview with French media on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia’s offensive in the east had stopped and that the situation on the battlefield was much better than three months ago.
Last month, Russia captured Avdiyivka, near the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk. It was one of the bloodiest battles of this war.
Since then, the Russians have claimed capture of several small settlements further west as their forces struggle to maintain their advantage.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian military rejected Moscow’s claim on Tuesday that it had captured the village of Nevelske in the Donetsk region.
Russia’s claims that it captured the village “do not correspond to reality, […] there is no reason to say that (Ukraine) has lost control of Nevelsk,” Dmytro Lykhov, the representative of Ukrainian forces in the region, told AFP on Wednesday.
