“The combination of flu and covid creates a difficult situation in hospitals”, analyzes Marc Van Ranst

The two experts call for vigilance, but do not consider it necessary to take new measures.

The latest figures on the health situation show that the bar of 3,000 hospitalized patients has once more been exceeded. The average number of coronary patients admitted to hospital each day between March 29 and April 4 was 216, an increase of 4% from the previous week.

On the other hand, the number of people infected is once more falling, by 8% on a weekly basis. “It’s a window to the future,” says Marc Van Ranst. “If all the numbers were to go up, I would be concerned. Now that infections are down, that’s not the case. However, vigilance is still required.”

Both men agree that the situation in intensive care is not so bad. A total of 185 people were in intensive care on Tuesday, an occupancy rate of 9%. According to biostatistician Molenberghs, this is due to the omikron variant of the coronavirus, which makes people less sick than the delta variant, and the level of vaccination in our country. “But ordinary departments have to deal with a large number of patients. Many university hospitals have to postpone care once more.”
