The Colombian National Team closed the South American qualifiers with a new victory (0-1), this time as a visitor once morest Paraguay at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asunción.

The Werder Bremen forward was in charge of causing the handball in the area and, later, he agreed with James Rodríguez that he would be in charge of executing it, taking into account that in October he had given the penalty to Luis Díaz in Quito without a happy ending .

The truth is that this was not the only possible penalty decision in which referee Jesús Valenzuela had to intervene. Minutes earlier he had already denied Colombia a maximum penalty following a slight touch by goalkeeper Carlos Coronel on Jefferson Lerma.

To get away from the controversy, Conmebol revealed the VAR audios and explained in this way why the decision in both plays was correct. “A normal game contact,” considers the South American confederation regarding the play in which Lerma fell inside the area.

Juan Soto, VAR of the match, reviewed the action from different angles and determined that it was “very slight contact” to think regarding changing Valenzuela’s decision, so he quickly gave him the order to resume the match.

After reviewing the action, the members of the VAR notified Valenzuela that his decision was correct and he should continue with the penalty, despite the airy claims of the Paraguayan bias.

Borré, on the edge of the prison

At minute 18, when the match was already 1-0 in favor of the Tricolor, midfielder Rubén Sosa was knocked down in the Colombian area following a blow to the back by Santos Borré, but the refereeing body considered that it was the Paraguayan who was the who sought contact.

The review was carried out as indicated in the regulations and following evaluating the contact, Juan Soto agreed with the decision made on the field of play. “There is a contact, but he stops to be touched,” they said from the cabin.

This was the play most demanded by the Paraguayan players, who pressured judge Valenzuela without success. The decision made by the VAR was so quick that there was not even a moment of discussion because the match continued its course amidst the home team’s unsuccessful attempts to reach a tie on the scoreboard.

Paraguay, on the other hand, is in seventh place with just 5 points added in 6 disputed dates, partially obtaining a place for the playoffs with a team from another confederation.

The South American qualifiers will resume in September of next year, which indicates that the preparation of the 10 participating countries will focus first on the Copa América dispute in mid-2024 in the United States.
