Dubai, Vae (ots/PRNewswire) DUBAI, UAE, June 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/– The “Climate X” leadership training program is now accepting applications from university students around the world. Interested students can apply at register. The registration deadline is June 30, 2023.

Strategically supported by UNFCCC, UNESCO and global partners, this training program co-hosted by the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC) and the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) aims to equip the next generation with the skills they need to to become future climate leaders. The program emphasizes a synergistic approach that brings together respected educational resources and offers an innovative curriculum.

A paradigm shift in development

The transition to a carbon-neutral economy means more than just moving away from fossil fuels. It is “a paradigm shift in development that will result in a new model of modernization that will benefit the world and can contribute to a green and prosperous future,” said Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Grantham Research Institute at the LSE and Chair of the Academic Committee of the GAUC.

This paradigm shift is accompanied by profound changes in the labor market that open up brand new requirements and opportunities. “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and pillars, and whatever their future career path, they must embrace carbon neutrality as a common cause,” said Dr. WANG Binbin, Secretary General of GAUC.

The training program, themed ‘Climate X’, highlights the transformative impacts of climate change and its close connection to other UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the success of the ‘Climate x’ pilot program in 2022, which is open only to students Reserved for GAUC member universities, the 2023 training program aims to help more young people seize the opportunities of the paradigm shift and contribute to the realization of a net-zero future by opening up participation to higher education students worldwide.

Renowned education at 28 universities and beyond

As the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in 2023, GAUC has entered into a strategic partnership with the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA), an alliance of 15 member universities from across Asia, to jointly develop the training programme to host.

By expanding the existing network of GAUC member universities, this partnership brings the continent’s particular challenges related to climate change into focus while maintaining a comprehensive global perspective. Throughout the training program, experts from GAUC and AUA member universities will collaborate to deliver lectures and workshops focused on the synergy between climate change and GAUC’s annual key themes, namely the synergy between climate change and clean energy, health, disasters and sustainable fashion.

Thanks to the extensive global partner network, the training also offers various workshops, panel discussions and extracurricular lectures by guest speakers from UN organizations, industry, NGOs, civil society and other fields.

From trainees to future climate leaders

To enable participants to progress from the role of learner in climate knowledge to the role of leader in climate action, the training program adopted a ‘train the trainer’ approach in the form of a ‘1+3’ module. Within the module, 1 refers to the online coursework spread over a month in July; 3 symbolizes the three hybrid events that enrolled students must complete from August to November to put their leadership skills and climate knowledge into practice. The third event will be recognized as a youth event of 2023 Global Youth Climate Week (the week), a mechanism co-initiated by GAUC and over 100 global multi-stakeholders in 2022.

After completing the requirements of the 1 + 3 module, the students will be certified by GAUC and AUA as “Climate X” trainers taking place, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment will receive the additional Climate X Pioneer award. The Climate X Pioneers will also have the opportunity to be selected for the COP28 GAUC Youth Delegation in Dubai and see the highlights of the Youth To put climate action at the forefront of global climate policy.
