The City of Liège Unpaid Debts: Controversy, Crisis, and Calls for Action

We wrote last November, the City of Liège is claiming 100,000 unpaid debts from citizens for a total amount of 35 million euros. From then on, many Liégeois received “a friendly reminder” to pay a tax. A tax “of which some were not even aware”, denounces the PTB.

“We have received numerous reports of invoices with astronomical sums: 330 euros for waste taxes never claimed, 600 euros for nursery costs,” explains Sophie Lecron, PTB municipal councilor. Some invoices date back to 2015. The Labor Party therefore wonders “if there is not a statute of limitations for invoices dating back more than five years”.

The City of Liège had also justified these delays by the computer attack of 2021 and the various crises. But the letter mentions an “amicable reminder”, while “many Liégeois have simply never received a first invoice”, deplores the PTB.

While some people apparently did not receive these invoices, others “already paid them”. Finally, traders would also have received invoices for taxes that they thought were exempt during the covid period. This is not an invoice reminder but rather an order to pay”.

Purchasing power crisis

A payment that must be honored before December 27. “But the City of Liège took three years to send invoices and is now asking citizens to pay this amount in 3 weeks,” says the group.

”How can we impose such a short payment deadline, especially for such high sums? The holidays are approaching, and the budget of the people of Liège is already tight due to the crisis in purchasing power. This is unacceptable,” concludes the PTB, which requests the emergency suspension of the payment deadline of December 27.

In addition, the party wishes to convene an extraordinary municipal council, “in order to shed light on this issue and respond to the concerns of Liégeois”.

This operation is important to regain cash flow.

This reminder campaign “is important to (re)gain cash”, explained the municipal authorities, who nevertheless assured that payment plans were possible. It is also possible to contest these invoices, which “do not include any reminder costs and no late payment interest given the circumstances”.
