The Traunsee city wants to demonstrate its creativity in a global UNESCO city network and thus internationally. At the end of June, Gmunden officially applied for admission to the worldwide UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), which comprises around 300 cities, under the motto “Fit for the future through culture and creativity”. To date, Graz (since 2011) and Linz (since 2014) are only two other Austrian cities that are members of this association.
After several weeks of testing, Gmunden’s candidate status has now been officially confirmed. An international jury will decide on the admission in the next few months. We can expect certainty regarding this in late autumn.
Mayor Stefan Krapf (VP) is convinced that inclusion in the global network of creative cities would not only be a special distinction for Gmunden, but would also provide a lasting, sustainable impetus for the future development of the city. As is well known, the core competence is ceramics: the Gmundner ceramic factory is the largest of its kind in Europe, and the innovative sanitary ceramics from Laufen Austria AG can be found all over the world.
