The Circle of Truth is a truly special immersive theater performance and is now taking place in Amsterdam. Does immersive theater not mean much to you? We visited the show last Saturday and explain what to expect! One thing is certain: it will be a special evening, like nothing you have ever experienced before. Don’t wait too long, because the show can still be visited until the end of March. Are you going too?
The Circle of Truth Amsterdam: amazing immersive theater performance at the NDSM wharf, can be visited until the end of March!
When you think of theater, do you think of sitting anonymously in a dark room and watching the show in silence? The Circle of Truth is the complete opposite. We are heading to a large warehouse at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam North, and we are extremely curious – and even a little nervous. It will be an interdisciplinary mindfuck, we read on the website, and we will step out of our comfortable social bubble. Exciting! You can choose just the show or a vegan 3-course menu in advance, and as Culi’s we of course choose the latter. We sit at a long table and immediately start talking to our tablemates.

A vegan 3-course menu at The Circle of Truth Amsterdam
The food is completely vegan, nice and light and you can really taste the pure flavors of the vegetables! We eat a delicious pepper soup with eggplant and a crispy potato, very tasty. A bit of theater starts between the courses: a singer and a pianist play a song together. The singer walks between the tables and looks at us intently. And because she comes so close, it already feels quite intimate: a harbinger for the rest of the theater turns out to be later! As a main course we get a homemade piece of tempeh with a fantastic fermented black bean sauce, crispy vegetables and a piece of bread with parsley pesto. And we finish with a white chocolate panna cotta, with meringue, hemp seeds and various preparations of blood orange. A nice light ending to our dinner!

Break away from your social bubble
Then it’s time for the show. It is precisely the element of surprise that gives this theater something special, so we won’t reveal all the secrets. But expect an evening where you are guided through different rooms. And you will certainly break away from your own social bubble! Right at the beginning you will receive instructions that will allow you to interact with the other guests. And – exciting but also very fun – you can count on eventually ending up in a group without the company you came with. This gives you interesting conversations about the plays you see: I thought the insights of other people really added to my experience! Fortunately, you see your ‘own’ friends regularly throughout the evening, and you can exchange how you experienced it separately.

Intimate performances at The Circle of Truth
And the theater itself? Sometimes you are just a spectator, silently watching a beautiful performance. Sometimes as an audience you literally walk through the play, and it feels as if you also have a small role in the play. In any case, it is extremely intimate to be so close to the actors, which immediately makes the performances more moving. Sometimes a bit strange, but extremely special to experience. After an intense final performance, a word of thanks is spoken, and then the hall suddenly turns into a club: the lights go out, the music gets louder and the audience and actors mingle on the dance floor.
