The Church of Córdoba called on citizens to vote in the next national elections to “consolidate the civic and democratic culture”.
The call of the Social Pastoral of Córdoba is known following citizen participation decreased both in the elections for governor and for mayor of Córdoba.
“A characteristic that has been occurring in this electoral year is the low percentage of citizens who go to the polls. The disenchantment with politics is evident, and the very low percentage of voters expresses, in part, this reality.describes the document entitled “The importance of voting”.
Context
The statement acknowledges that “Many people experience discontent towards the political leadership that, in 40 years of democracy, has not been able to solve serious problems such as poverty, access to quality education, health and security”.
Furthermore, it is admitted that “in so many conversations it becomes clear anger and discontent, and a growing apathy or disinterest in politics and politicians”.
For the Social Pastoral, “many leaders do not tune in or empathize with millions of Argentines who suffer from exclusion; and, instead, they invest their energies in sterile confrontations, in fierce internalisms, in obsessive searches for power to dominate instead of to serve people and the common good”.
When describing the prevailing situation, he considers that “These and other reasons discourage many citizens from voting. Apathy grows and is contagious! However, he cautions that “Insist on how important and decisive it is to be able to choose our representatives and rulers”.
“Let’s choose with conscience and responsibility”
The Church affirms in the document that “Voting is the most concrete and decisive way to participate and express ourselves in democracy” and? “It is a commitment and a non-transferable and very important civic duty”.
“Voting is the tool we have to express ourselves, so that our claims are supported by our concrete commitment.”insists the ecclesial writing.
In another part of the communiqué, the Pastoral Social maintains that it is not necessary to let “disenchantment and discouragement lead us to believe that not voting is the best”.
“Not voting does not change what we would like to change. Not voting is an understandable form of protest, but fruitless and detrimental to the democracy that cost us so much. Let’s vote and encourage voting”points out when justifying the call to go to the polls.
Called
“If we do not commit, we will not be able to demand later. “Participating in democratic life with the vote is essential, but it is not the only thing. In order to improve the quality of a democracy, it is necessary for citizens of good will to become involved, in addition, in politics, in neighborhood centers, in clubs, in intermediate associations or in the “third sector,” adds the note. of the ecclesiastical body.
A responsibility of all
At the end of the statement, the Social Pastoral asks the adults transmitting to young people “the importance of going to the polls”.
Reviews
For the church “It is necessary that the authorities and the electoral courts serve, above all, the interest of the citizens to know with certainty and transparency the results of the scrutinies, instead of privileging the interests of pro-government or opposition parties, or the economic-technocratic interests of the companies that are contracted for this purpose”.
“The repeated bad experiences of delayed, improvised and accidental scrutiny they undermine the transparency that the electoral system should have, and they also undermine the confidence of citizens”, he points out in a critical tone.
“Let’s celebrate this anniversary of democracy and honor our Homeland by attending to vote and electing our rulers and representatives with freedom and responsibility.”concludes the document.
