This is no longer a novelty, the Chinese are more and more aggressive on the video game market with NetEase and Tencent at the forefront and it is precisely the latter which is making headlines today by placing its pawns on one of the best Polish studios. Indeed, following investing in Lighthouse, the studio of Playground Games veterans in early July, Tencent is now interested in Techland.

Tencent becomes majority shareholder of Techland

It was today that Paweł Marchewka, founder of the Polish studio born in 1991, announced the news. Techland quickly clarified that it would retain full ownership of its IPs and creative freedom. Marchewka, who will remain CEO of the company, said this :

“We dream of making Dying Light the ultimate zombie gaming experience for players around the world, bringing you multiple amazing adventures and pushing the boundaries of single-player and online modes to a whole new level.

Our open-world action-RPG in a fantasy setting is already shaping up to be something truly special, and the goal is to make sure it lives up to expectations as our first new IP in almost a decade.

Can we make these dreams a reality? Yes we can. But what we’ve come to realize is that the best, boldest dreams can only be realized by working side-by-side with like-minded friends and partners, who share the same vision, passion, and willingness to back it up with their knowledge, experience, and abilities.

Today, I am happy to announce the partnership with Tencent, which is in the process of becoming the majority shareholder of Techland.

Partnering with Tencent will allow us to move full steam ahead in executing our games vision. We chose an ally who has already partnered with some of the biggest video game companies in the world and helped them reach new heights while respecting their way of doing things.

We will retain full ownership of our IPs, we will retain our creative freedom, and we will continue to operate as we think right. I will also continue to serve as CEO of the studio.”

Contrary to other more succinct statements in similar situations, Paweł Marchewka really does not hide his enthusiasm and also seems to have a following behind the ideas. It is clear that Tencent can provide quite interesting financial security for Techland to go through with its projects.

As a reminder, the studio’s latest game is Dying Light 2 Stay Human, released in February 2022 and their next project is a fantasy open-world action RPG made by a new team made up of a number of former CD Projekt Red members.
