The Chief Justice was removed from office on the charge of taking bribe

Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies have fired the head of the Supreme Court after he was detained in connection with an investigation into a $2.7 million bribe.

According to the Reuters news agency, after the detention of Vysevolud Niaziev, 140 out of 142 judges supported the decision to remove him from office in the Supreme Court session.

The head of Ukraine’s Supreme Court was dismissed on Tuesday after being detained in a bribery probe in what anti-corruption authorities described as their biggest-ever case.

Prosecutor of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office Oleksandr Omalchenko said the Supreme Court chief justice was detained as part of a suspected bribery scheme.

In a briefing by the prosecutor of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, it was said that the Chief Justice has been detained and steps are being taken to investigate other persons involved in criminal activities.

A few hours after an emergency session of the Supreme Court voted to remove Vysevolud Niyayev as the head of the court in a vote of no confidence.

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office announced on Monday that anti-corruption agencies are investigating large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court system.

The head of the agency, Semyon Krivonos, said in Tuesday’s briefing that the head of the Supreme Court is suspected of accepting $2.7 million in bribes.

He said that we are showing through real cases and actions that our priority is corruption of high-ranking people, criminal actions at the highest level of power.

Krivonos said the bribes were paid to get a ruling in favor of Finance & Credit Financial Group, owned by prominent businessman Konstantin Zhivago, and could be part of a wider scheme to pressure the court.
