The Chaotic Filming of ‘The Idol’: Behind the Scenes and the Controversial Director Change

It’s no longer a secret for anyone: the filming of The Idol was chaotic. The magazine Rolling Stone was the first to sound the alarm in an investigation last March denouncing the ambient toxicity on the set and a series which turned into “torture porn”, according to several testimonies. A few weeks later, the site Deadline announced that director Amy Seimetz, initially attached to the project, had been fired when 80% of the scenes had already been filmed.

The Idollaunched by HBO on June 4 (and with us on Prime Video with the Warner Pass), is a co-creation between Sam Levinson, the very prominent showrunner ofEuphoriasinger The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, who also plays one of the main roles, and producer Reza Fahim.

Behind the camera, director Amy Seimetz brought pop star Jocelyn and her desiderata to life…until she was fired by production, then. Rumor has it that his vision, centered on the female perspective of his heroine, would have displeased The Weeknd.

It was therefore Sam Levinson who replaced her at short notice, not forgetting to rewrite and return certain scenes, with the result that we know. Today, the Twitter account @thisisnotahmad revealed behind-the-scenes footage of what Amy Seimetz’s version, the only woman on the creative team, would have been like had she not been fired from the project. The images from the initial tweet were deleted, but the user then put them back below his initial comment which reads:

“Amy Seimetz’ version of The Idol was to include scenes from Jocelyn’s past as a child star. One of the biggest flaws in Sam Levinson’s vision is that Jocelyn being a pop star never felt real or authentic, so it would have been nice to see that come to fruition.”

In these three photos, we see Jocelyn in a very colorful setting having fun with the team members in a teenager’s room. Since then, on social networks, fans have been clamoring for HBO to release the initial version with the hashtag #ReleaseTheAmySeimetzCut.
