‘I thought I might make a lot of money.’
Elementary and middle school students cited this as the biggest reason they wanted to become doctors. Four years ago, the most common reason was ‘because it’s something I like to do.’ Analysis suggests that the tendency to value economic compensation and social recognition has increased.
According to the ‘Changes in Students’ Occupational Values’ report released by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training on the 30th, the first reason for students’ choice of desired career over the past four years (2018-2022) was ‘because it’s what I like’, and the second place was ‘because I like it.’ There was no change in ‘I think I can do well’. However, the number of responses ‘I thought I might make a lot of money’ increased among elementary, middle, and high school students. Elementary school students increased by 11.1 percentage points to 15.5%, and middle school students increased by 3.1 percentage points to 8.9%. High school students increased by 2.5 percentage points to 9.0%. In particular, among the reasons for wanting to become a doctor, elementary school students (30.1%) and middle school students (29.3%) cited ‘because I thought I might make a lot of money’. High school students (22.8%) had the largest response, ‘I think I can do well.’
The researcher said, “While the tendency to pursue economic freedom and stability through a job is decreasing, the tendency to pursue creative challenges and the possibility of development through a job is decreasing. Socially, efforts are needed to emphasize diversity and balance in job values.” “He said.
