Obviously a little emotional, but still very happy to be able to do something else, rest and have a real social life“, confides Philipe a few days before retiring.

After owning his bakery for 20 years, he is now looking to turn it over. But following a year and a half of searching, it was impossible to find a candidate. “There aren’t many buyers and the banks don’t follow easily so it’s difficult.”

It must be said that the profession is already demanding to begin with and that several problems must be added: “the energy cost, which makes it perhaps less attractive than before“, points out Philippe.

To take over a bakery, in addition to knowing how to get up early, you need to have backbone and a strong wallet: count on 500.00 euros.

You have to be passionate and you know that, like in the restaurant business, you work weekends and public holidays“, warns Martine, baker in another establishment.

Despite the constraints, local bakeries are important for the customers who flock there in large numbers. “It will hurt“, confides one of them to our microphone, mentioning a possible closure. “We always hope that there will be a buyer here“, wishes another.

Currently, there are between 800 and 850 young people learning the profession of baker in Belgium.
