It was previously reported that the delivery of the Abrams tanks, which were initially promised in January, would take months to materialize due to their secret advanced technology.
In particular, the Abrams used by the US Army have a unique type of DU armor, so secret that even their own troops cannot see inside without proper authorization.
Specialist Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst at the Office of the US Secretary of Defense, told Sputnik that Abrams tanks are very complex machines that require specialized training and tools, which the Ukrainian Army is not equipped to handle.
“The level of technology in some of these vehicles is quite high. And as a consequence, the United States does not believe that the Ukrainians can master that type of equipment in such a short time. This equipment, some of it, may be too sophisticated. So, it is just a question of the ability of the Ukrainians to be able to not just handle it, but master it, especially in a war situation,” he said.
“If they are under fire, the technology has to become second nature and this is all new to them. Also, the Abrams is a very technical machine. Unless they are taught and trained with it over and over once more, their ability to maintain the integrity of the tank without it being destroyed is very low,” he estimated.
“The tank is very sophisticated, and the Abrams’ ability to maneuver and move is somewhat limited by the ability of its fuel supplies to keep up. It consumes jet fuel. It needs jet fuel,” he further noted.
He also drew an analogy between trying to drive a Lamborghini when only Volkswagen cars are known for driving. “So I think it’s going to be a pretty big leap for them to go from training in a very short period of time to actual combat and being able to master it.”
“I think it depends on the proficiency of the wielders and how familiar they are with the equipment. Given the levels of technology they have, they not only have to know how to use it, but also have to master battlefield tactics. Because there are missiles that can penetrate the armor of Abrams tanks and from a very long distance.A Javelin [misil antitanque], for example, might probably destroy an Abrams. And that’s just one example,” she concludes.
