Trisakti University criminal law expert Abdul Fickar Hadjar said that Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (MA) for the 2024-2029 period, Sunarto, has a series of duties, one of which is to protect the dignity of the judiciary from the legal mafia. He said Sunarto must ensure that the judiciary does not become a place for justice transactions.
“Make sure that the judiciary does not become a free market for buying and selling justice. Any judge who is caught using his authority for personal gain should be fired and criminally prosecuted,” said Fickar to Media Indonesia, Wednesday (16/10).
Apart from that, Fickar believes that Sunarto is also responsible for dealing with internal problems such as problems with allowances and salaries that the judges complained about. He believes that apart from having the authority to decide on cassation and judicial review cases, the Supreme Court is also the peak of the judiciary which oversees many courts and their judges.
Fickar hopes that Sunarto will be able to overcome internal problems and manage the judiciary better.
“The Supreme Court is also responsible for internal issues such as requests for salary and allowance increases as recently demanded by subordinate judges. Threatening to strike like workers should not happen. This threat to strike by subordinate judges is a reflection of the inability of the Supreme Court leadership to manage the judiciary properly,” he said.
Furthermore, Fickar believes that the Supreme Court must pay attention to and encourage judges to be more professional. Thus, his duties as a law enforcer are used to serve society and the country.
“The strategic position of a judge is potentially vulnerable to being used to blackmail those seeking justice. This will be the main task of the elected MA Chief. Serving is more appreciative of devotion to the country and the community,” he said. (M-4)
