This March 12, 2024, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) celebrates its 56th anniversary. This will be the very first commemoration of its kind without this machine to “win” the elections founded by Omar Bongo on March 12, 1968, being in power, therefore far from the State apparatus and all the advantages that it happily derived from it. .
Undermined by the cascade of desertions and the drying up of all the taps from which milk and honey flowed, is the CEO currently a living dead or a party with a future?
The commander of the “drifting” ship, the current Deputy Secretary General 1 of the party, Luc Oyoubi would be the first to believe that the CEO should not be thrown into oblivion. He resolved to recall the troops on March 12, as part of a high mass which will mark both the 56th anniversary and the resumption of activities of the former ruling party, plunged into a deep coma since the coup d’état of August 30, 2023, thus sounding the death knell of a reign that seemed endless.
Groggy, hierarchs, activists and sympathizers of the CEO had very quickly deserted the headquarters of the Louis district which now displays a landscape of nothingness and from which for a while only filtered cries of distress from staff left to precariousness due to the unpaid wages.
Mobilization capacities
On the guidance note relating to the organization of what is called “Self-criticism and re-foundation of the CEO…” signed by Luc Oyoubi, we can read that the said meetings will notably consist « to identify the errors of the past which led to the change of regime and to propose possible solutions for the future… »
If the initiative and the approach of the Deputy Secretary General 1 may seem laudable at first glance, some are ironic regarding the current capacity of the former ruling party to cast a wide net, cut off from its main sources of financing.
Beyond the intention, we can also question the willingness and ability of “CEOs” to embark on a sincere exercise of self-criticism and questioning.
Luc Oyoubi, will he really be heard? We can doubt it judging by the frantic pace of resignations recorded in Louis where by the cartload, many activists and not the least are leaving the ship, just as many of yesterday’s allies left in search of green pastures.
What regarding the Distinguished Comrade President (DCP)?
It is with great interest that the public awaits to know the outcome of the discussions relating to the question of the presidency of the CEO, which figures prominently on the work agenda of the future meetings. Ill and impotent, Ali Bongo Ondimba, as we know, is no longer able to take the helm.
The former party in power will certainly have to look for and find a leader capable of remobilizing and putting the troops back in battle order, with a view to future elections in 2025.
We must find this rare bird before tackling the essential, the vast project which consists of winning back the hearts of the Gabonese people, traumatized and exasperated by half a century of chaotic governance by the former “party-state”.
The posture of this party on March 12, 2024 will determine the future of the party. Either the ship will continue to take on water and sink further, or it will be refloated for future battles.
