Xinhua News Agency (Xinhua) New York Governor Cathy Hochuer signed a new gun control law on the 1st, banning guns in “sensitive places” in New York state, requiring gun license applicants to receive more training and provide social media accounts for the government review.

The U.S. Supreme Court passed a ruling on June 23 that overturned a law in New York state that restricted the concealed carrying of firearms in New York state since 1913. Hotzul pledged at the time to initiate new gun control legislation to the extent permitted by the ruling.

New York State’s latest gun control law, which takes effect on September 1, stipulates that people are not allowed to carry guns in the following “sensitive places”, including government departments, medical institutions, places of worship, libraries, sports fields, parks, zoos, schools, nursing homes, public Transportation, museums, theaters, Times Square, etc.

After the Supreme Court ruling, Hochuer agreed to remove the requirement to provide “good cause” when applying for firearms, but still required the officer issuing the firearm to determine that the applicant had “good moral character.”

According to New York State’s latest gun control law, applicants need to meet with a gun license review officer, provide social media accounts and contact information of family members for the past three years, and must complete at least 16 hours of gun safety training.

New York State will also ban the possession of firearms in businesses or workplaces unless their owners indicate that they are “welcome.”

“New York State will continue to protect people from harm despite the Supreme Court ruling (reversing gun control efforts),” Hochuer said. “They may think they can change our lives with a pen, but we also have a pen.”

New York state’s regulation of gun licensing has made it the fifth-lowest gun fatality rate among the 50 states, according to Hochuer.

Opinions in support of the state’s new gun control legislation argue that the new gun control measures follow the latest Supreme Court ruling while keeping weapons out of the hands of criminals.

However, some Republican lawmakers have vowed to overturn the law, arguing that the new legislation in New York violates the Second Amendment’s right to bear guns.

The chronic problem of guns in the United States is difficult to solve, and many factors are involved. The Democratic and Republican parties have serious differences on the issue of gun control, and federal gun control laws have repeatedly been frustrated in Congress. According to statistics from the US “Gun Violence Archives” website, since the beginning of this year, nearly 21,000 people in the United States have lost their lives due to gun violence, and 279 “mass shootings” have occurred in which at least 4 people were killed and injured.
