The Center for Justice and Peace asserted that the disqualifications are aimed at creating opposition to the measure of the government of Nicolás Maduro in order to ensure a victory that allows him to remain in power for a new period.

About the recent political disqualifications of the leaders of the opposition on behalf of the Government of Nicolás Maduro, the Center for Justice and Peace (Cepaz) explained that these measures violate the exercise of political rights and stand in the way of genuine and democratic elections.

According to Cepaz, the disqualifications of political leaders in opposition to the government of Nicolás Maduro has been a pattern of persecution exercised since at least 2002.

The Center for Justice and Peace explained that the political disqualifications represent a pattern of persecution that includes arbitrary arrests, initiation of legal proceedings, removal from public office, irregular searches of homes, raids on parliamentary immunity, threats, harassment, violence, and even attacks once morest family members of the opposition leadership.

“The systematic attacks once morest the opposition political leadership constitute a violation of the exercise of the political rights of the direct victims (…) and also of the rights of the population that cannot freely vote for the leadership by which they feel represented,” the NGO stated.

Another important element that Cepaz highlights is that Venezuelan regulations contemplate political disqualifications for elected positions as an accessory penalty, that is to say, that it is the consequence of a principal that It must be derived from a final sentence, issued by a court.

“The foregoing translates into the impossibility of a body such as the Comptroller General of the Republic, with an administrative decision, disqualifying a citizen from exercising the right to be elected to positions of popular representation, since it does not have the competence to take this types of decisions, because as we have mentioned, these decisions fall on a court,” said Cepaz.

The Center for Justice and Peace asserted that the disqualifications are aimed at creating opposition to the measure of the government of Nicolás Maduro in view of the presidential elections of the year 2024, in order to ensure a victory that allows him to stay in power for a new period.
