July 5, 2024 – 09:25

Due to the eruption of Mount Etna, the airspace above the Catania airport has been closed, for the time being no flights are departing or arriving from the Sicilian city – writes the maintainer on Facebook.

“The runway is unusable due to a significant amount of volcanic ash falling on the airport, so both arrivals and departures have been suspended”

they write.

According to their information, the situation will probably remain like this until 3 p.m., and passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.

Europe’s most famous volcano revived with a spectacular eruption at the beginning of July, following a break of half a year. Although the eruption may be attractive to tourists at first, based on previous cases, it can turn into a more powerful, so-called paroxysmal lava fountain eruption at any time.

Update: everything was arranged by Friday followingnoon, the airport is operating once more.
