Set up to analyze the 2022 drought, an interministerial mission has just published an inspection report in which it warns of the possibility of the occurrence of more serious events in the coming years. According to the authors, from 2023, France might experience the same difficulties, or even an even more problematic situation than the previous year.
Faced with difficulties in supplying drinking water, the prefectures are imposing restrictions to preserve resources. Among the activities targeted is that of car washes, which can be temporarily closed by the administration, or forced to reduce their water use or shorten their opening hours. Employers’ organization of automobile services, Mobilians, however, defends the 12,000 car wash points in France, and calls for a relaxation of the measures. “The car wash industry cleans up the vehicle fleet and preserves resources while only using 0.2% of drinking water consumption”writes the union.
Another argument put forward by Mobilians: when the stations are closed, motorists wash their vehicles at home. However, according to the employers’ organization, the stations process more than 48,000 tonnes of polluted sludge per year. A mission that individuals and professionals do not fulfill when they clean at home or on the site of their business. In addition, the quantity of water consumed increases in significant proportions in the case of washing at home. According to the profession, a wash in a professional center requires 60 liters to 160 liters, once morest 300 liters when it is carried out outside the developed sites.
Restrictions progressives
Mobilians therefore calls for more progressive restriction measures and pleads for the creation of a compensation fund for the losses suffered by car washes due to administrative closures. The employers’ organization also calls for the creation of a “controlled water consumption” label to indicate the most economical centers to motorists.
The Blue Elephant brand is also stepping up to the plate. Its leaders insist on the role of washing centers as purification stations. “Potentiallyestimates Yves Brouchet, its director general, the centers might avoid the discharge of the 92.5 million tonnes of pollutants produced by the 40 million vehicles in circulation each year. »
