The Ecuadorian Police announced this Thursday the capture of alias “Satanás”, wanted by the Colombian justice system and considered one of the feared hitmen of the “Aragua Train”, a Venezuelan criminal gang that is believed to also operate in Bolivia, Chile and Peru. .
The director of Investigations of the Ecuadorian Police, Freddy Zarzosa, explained in a press conference that the subject identified as José Manuel Vera Sulbarán, known by the alias “Satanás”, has been captured in the Andean city of Loja, in the south from Ecuador.

The capture of the suspect has occurred following a process of international cooperation between Colombia and Ecuador, which has allowed the development of investigation operations and location of the subject required by Colombian justice.
A “blue diffusion” location order was pending on “Satanás”, issued through Interpol, Zarzosa said following indicating that on September 6, the Ecuadorian Police had received a formal request from its Colombian counterpart to locate the suspect.
Coordinations between the Gaula (Unified Action Groups for Personal Freedom) of the Colombian Police and the Unase (Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit) of Ecuador, allowed the operation to be carried out to locate “Satan” in Loja, whose identity was corroborated with a fingerprint.
Apparently, the subject would have entered Ecuador illegally regarding two months ago and following staying in the coastal cities of Guayaquil and Portoviejo, he would have traveled to Loja in the company of a romantic partner, to carry out “normal activities,” Zarzosa added.
The detainee has been transferred to the city of Tulcán, bordering Colombia, to be handed over to the corresponding authorities of that country, following having been “inadmissible” to Ecuador due to his irregular immigration status, the police chief highlighted.
Zarzosa said that “Satanás” is investigated in Colombia for an extensive criminal history that includes homicides, trafficking in weapons, explosives and ammunition.
He added that the investigation in Ecuador will continue to find out if he had links with people or if he was involved in criminal matters in the country.
On September 27, the Government of Ecuador had ruled out the presence in the country of the Tren de Aragua gang, following its leader, Héctor “Niño Guerrero”, escaped from the Venezuelan Tocorón prison along with other prisoners.
“In Ecuador we rule out the presence of the Aragua Train. There is no evidence that this criminal group operates in the country,” said the Minister of the Interior, Juan Zapata.
Satan was captured in Peru in 2019 following committing various crimes. But following being released he escaped to Chile.
On March 25, 2022, he was captured in the Chilean city of Iquique. He was accused of illicit association, kidnapping for ransom, robbery with intimidation, kidnapping with homicide, identity theft, illegal possession of ammunition, and human trafficking for sexual exploitation.
