There are games whose affiliation with other works is immediately apparent. With its sets of stations lost in space and its horrific humanoid creatures, The Callisto Protocol is immediately reminiscent of Dead Space. Nothing might be more normal, since it is the creator of this horrific saga, Glen Schofield, who is in charge of the project.
It is through a new video broadcast during the State of Play that The Callisto Protocol showed up for all to see. The opportunity to notice that the teams of Striking Distance will offer a third-person game focused on narration. The ambition displayed by the studio is to fully involve the player so that the latter feels “many emotions”. Set on Callisto, Jupiter’s dead moon, in 2320, The Callisto Protocol chronicles the misadventures of Jacob Lee (played by Josh Duhamel), an inmate of Black Iron prison who finds himself trapped. Indeed, an epidemic transforms all that looks like men into horrible bloodthirsty creatures, the Biophages.
Via a post on the PlayStation Blog, Glen Schofield explains “mix atmospheres, tension, brutality, helplessness and humanity to thrill players”. We also learn that the studio takes care of the lighting, the haptic feedback (thanks to the DualSense), but also the spatialization of the sound in order to create “one of the most terrifying games ever” according to Dan Smith, creative director of the project.
On the gameplay side, the player will have a weapon called “GRP” to repel his attackers. We are promised close combat as tense as it is varied, since it will be possible to freeze your enemies or send them into lethal elements of the scenery. Survival-horror obliges, the player will have to pay attention to his reserves of ammunition and his health.
The Callisto Protocol will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on December 2, 2022.
