The bus killing in Bærum has been dropped: – Makes the grief extra heavy

It was on the evening of Friday 22 December 2023 that 26-year-old Fariddullah Rahmani, who was of Afghan origin, was stabbed when the bus was about to pass Bærum hospital.

The victim was stabbed several times with a knife in the upper body by a then 14-year-old co-passenger.

The accused boy reported himself to the police a few hours later, and a few days later he admitted during questioning to having stabbed Rahmani with a knife.

– On Monday 15 July, the Attorney General dropped the case because the accused was under 15 at the time of the crime. This is one of several cases in the past year that show how wrong things can go when weapons are carried in public spaces. The police take this very seriously and work continuously to prevent knives being carried without valid reason, writes police attorney Børge Enoksen in the Oslo police district in a press release.

– No emergency situation

The boy explained in questioning after he had come forward, that he claimed that he felt that something was about to happen, and that he felt threatened by the deceased, says Enoksen.

According to the police attorney, the boy explained that the deceased had molested his mates on previous occasions.

– The police have investigated these allegations, without having them confirmed by other evidence. The accused and the deceased did not know each other from before, writes Enoksen.

– It is clear that the course of events inside the bus was not an emergency situation. The action happened completely unexpectedly. The accused was part of a charged youth environment in Sandvika and explained that he usually carried a knife to defend himself. The knife was found in a forest where the accused ran after the incident, says Enoksen.

No doubt about sanity

Enoksen states that the accused was placed in a child protection institution after the incident, and that he is still there.

– A primary psychiatric examination of the accused has been carried out, which did not provide evidence to cast doubt on the accused’s sanity, says Enoksen.

The police attorney states that in the wake of the incident, the police have investigated several cases of threats that have been reported from both sides of the case. One of these threat cases is still under investigation, while the others have been dropped. Enoksen states that they have had several preventive meetings in this regard.

Maral Houshmand is an assistance lawyer for the bereaved. He says the investigation confirms that the killing was unprovoked and senseless. In a text message to VG he claims that the perpetrator’s claims about previous history and familiarity are not true.

– The lack of accountability and punishment of the perpetrator, as well as the absence of a deterrent effect, makes the grief extra heavy, says Houshmand.
