The Burkinabè diaspora has transferred to the country more than 1,000 billion FCFA in four years (minister)
Ouagadougou, Apr. 23, 22(AIB)-Burkinabe living abroad transferred between 2015 and 2019, more than 1,000 billion FCFA to the country, said Saturday, Minister Delegate for Cooperation Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.
“Over the period from 2015 to 2019, the amount of remittances reached a cumulative total of 1,122 billion, 750 million CFA francs,” said Minister Delegate for Cooperation Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, citing figures from the Central Bank. West African States (BCEAO).
Mr. Traoré was speaking on Saturday, during a webinar on the conclusions of the national workshop on remittances from the diaspora, held on October 4 and 5, 2021 in Ouagadougou.
He indicated that the contribution of Burkinabè abroad “has gone from 1.1% of GDP in 2016 to 3% for the year 2020, according to the FBDES (Burkinabe Fund for Economic and Social Development)”.
The Director General of Burkinabe Abroad Mamadou Ilboudo mentioned several difficulties that hinder the transfer of funds to Burkina Faso.
He notably cited the very high cost of transfers from certain countries and the prohibition made by others to transfer funds.
The webinar meeting was attended by representatives of banks and authorities of the Ministry in charge of Foreign Affairs and Burkinabè living abroad.
As a reminder, the purpose of the October 2021 meeting was “to define, within a broader framework, possible solutions to the difficulties encountered in the transfer of funds from the diaspora”.
