The Brussels Minister for Mobility pleads for other car-free Sundays: “It’s a great dynamic for this city”

She pleads once once more for this kind of initiative to happen once more. Discussions are underway with the 19 Brussels municipalities. From 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., cars were no longer authorized to circulate on the territory of the Brussels Region. Enough to leave boulevards and alleys to pedestrians, cyclists, and other walkers on scooters or roller skates. About 15,300 motorists had received a certificate to still use their vehicle this Sunday. This number is decreasing from year to year, according to the minister.

The day marked the kick-off of Mobility Week in the capital, on the theme of “Let’s make Brussels a city for children”. The aim is to dedicate public spaces to children and less to cars.

“People are going out, the children are happy, playing and cycling in the street. This shows that we need more space,” said Elke Van den Brandt.

Each year, the same question comes up: should we organize more initiatives of this kind? “I am currently in discussion with the municipalities, because this is indeed a measure taken in consultation with all 19 municipalities. So far, they are showing themselves to be cautiously positive. We have also discussed with the tourism sector and the horeca in order to reach everyone. It’s a great dynamic for this city and if it’s up to me, these days can be repeated”, concludes the minister.
