Modern technology and sustainability are two inseparable elements of the modern economy
“We work in a contemporary, modern way,” says Mindaugas. – This means that we use modern techniques, technologies, maps for fertilizing and spraying. Sustainability for us is about doing what is needed, when it is needed. We don’t spray or fertilize unnecessarily.”
Vidmantas adds: “A modern farm is not only modern technology, but also a responsible approach to the environment. We aim not only to get a good harvest, but also to preserve healthy and fertile soil for future generations.”
Microbiological products – for a healthier harvest and environment
Farmers pay special attention to microbiological products. “When citizens see sprinklers, they think that there is something terrible here, but often it is biological products, organics,” explains Mindaugas.
The brothers even built a special container for watering liquid biological products and microorganisms directly into the furrow. “Since these are microorganisms, they don’t like ultraviolet sunlight and work best when they get directly into the ground,” says Mindaugas.
Catch crops are the basis for biodiversity and soil improvement
Another sustainability practice is applied on the farm – the cultivation of catch crops. “Catch crops increase biodiversity, and their roots loosen the soil,” explains Mindaugas.
For this purpose, the brothers sow a mixture of as many as fifteen different plants, as each plant has its own specific roots and properties that enrich the soil. “The more different plants, the more the soil is enriched,” says Mindaugas.
Does not prevent earthworms from living and doing their work
The Martinaičiai practice minimal tillage, which, they say, “doesn’t prevent the earthworms from living and doing their work.” Crop rotation is also used, which helps to reduce the number of diseases and the need for pesticides.
“We want the land to remain sustainable and unspoiled for our children and grandchildren,” says Mindaugas. – Therefore, we use sustainable technologies, minimal tillage, crop rotation. Our goal is permanently covered soil with plants.”
Smart technology frees up your hands
The farm uses modern equipment, which not only facilitates the work, but also allows it to be done more efficiently. “Modern agricultural machinery often doesn’t even need to be driven, it works on autopilot,” says Mindaugas. “Of course, you must not lose your vigilance while observing whether all the automatic processes work smoothly.”
Vidmantas adds: “We listen to music and watch movies in the cabin. Modern tractors, combines and other machinery have many functions that make work easier.”
Let’s not forget the soil tests
In order to ensure optimal soil fertility and protect the environment, the Martinaičiai brothers constantly conduct soil tests. “Periodically, we conduct detailed surveys of our land,” says Mindaugas – This allows us to monitor the condition of the soil, its acidity, phosphorus and potassium content. This data helps us make decisions about fertilization to avoid overuse of fertilizers but ensure that the plants are getting all the nutrients they need.”
Vidmantas adds: “Soil research is very important for applying sustainable farming. They help us not only to improve the yield, but also to protect the environment from excessive use of chemicals.”
The Martinaičiai farm is an excellent example of how modern technologies and sustainable, eco-friendly practices can be successfully combined. The brothers not only strive to get a good harvest, but also to preserve the fertility of the soil for future generations, showing a responsible attitude towards the environment and their activities.
