“The Broken Pitcher” by Heinrich Von Kleist, one of the most well-known and popular comedies of European drama comes on Friday 12 July at the International Festival of Patras, translated, adapted and directed by Giorgos Kimoulis, to be hosted at 9.30 in the evening at the Municipal Summer Theater on Ritsou Street.

Theater lovers will watch a show with spartan characters, unexpected comic twists, constant misunderstandings and inevitable conflicts.

The play revolves around a trial in a provincial courtroom. Adam, the judge, is the most corrupt of all. When he first appears, his head is battered and bruised, and the judge’s wig (which might somewhat restore his dignity) is gone. His unimaginable appearance, as we gradually discover, is not unrelated to the case and the facts that will be investigated in the trial.

Mrs. Martha wants to be compensated for breaking an old, beloved jug that happened the night before. She has no doubt who the culprit is – Rupprecht, Eva’s daughter’s fiance. He was with her in her room that night, where following a quarrel the pitcher was found broken.

But he denies the accusation. He admits that he went to visit Eva, but when he got home, he heard a man’s voice in Eva’s room. He chased the intruder but managed to escape by throwing sand in Rupprecht’s eyes so that he (the intruder) might not be identified.

Eva, when interrogated, refuses to testify, insisting that this particular courtroom is not the right place for such a confession.

The solution is provided by a neighbor, Mrs. Brigitte, who had seen a man escape from Eva’s window. That man, fleeing through some tree branches, lost a judge’s wig. It becomes clear that Adam, the judge, was the culprit… .
