Almost two months following it was confirmed that the United Kingdom entered the TPP11, the British foreign minister visited Chile and said that “the imminent accession of the United Kingdom to the trans-Pacific partnership that includes Mexico, Peru and Chile is a positive step.”

The British Foreign Minister, James Cleverly, assured this Monday that Latin America can have a “decisive weight in the necessary remodeling of the international order.” and that collaboration with the United Kingdom in this regard “can make a difference to the entire world.”

In a speech delivered at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, in the heart of Santiago, Cleverly celebrated 200 years of diplomatic relations with our country and projected future challenges with the rest of the continent, from the need to strengthen democracy to confronting “threats transnationals” such as climate change.

“We need strong multilateral institutions that represent the world as it is today, politically, economically and demographically. This is currently not the case. The United Kingdom recognizes this and we want to work to change it”, explained the minister, who is touring the region.

British Foreign Minister visiting Chile

After meeting with his counterpart Alberto van Klaveren, Clevery stressed that “Latin America has a decisive role in reshaping an international order to adapt to a 21st century world. The population of this part of the planet and its economy have grown rapidly in recent decades.

He also recalled that “in 1969, Latin America was home to 279 million people. Today, this figure is more than 664 million people.

“Its demographic and economic weight gives it a fundamental role in determining whether the international order will endure. The shift in world power has been evident for some time, and it is my goal as chancellor to ensure that our strategic thinking reflects this simple fact. That is why I have come to Latin America this week”, stressed the British foreign minister.

“Territorial integrity”

Clevery emphasized “respect for sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity and self-determination”, values that in his opinion are present in the American continent with a coherent role in the United Nations supporting the “right of Ukraine to defend itself once morest aggression Russian”.

These values, the chancellor maintained, must “prevail alongside human rights, democracy, the rule of law, liberation and freedom.”

“It would be negligent on my part not to mention the Malvinas. Falklanders, like everyone else, deserve the freedom to decide their own future in political, cultural, economic and development terms. Their 2013 referendum made it clear that they wish to maintain their current relationship with the UK, as is their absolute right, and the UK will continue to support them in that decision,” he noted.

Trade and investment

“Last year, investment and trade (between Chile and) the United Kingdom recovered strongly following its fall in the pandemic, and the total value of importance and export increased by 45% to more than 40,000 million pounds”, he highlighted.

However, the British chancellor said that “Latin America represents only 2% of UK imports and 2.5% of its imports worldwide. I recognize that there is a lot of work to be done in both trading and investing.”

Cleverly’s visit, which began in Jamaica on May 18, focused on issues such as climate, democracy and the strengthening of multilateral organizations, also highlighting a “strategic focus” in terms of “critical minerals, green hydrogen and sustainable infrastructure”, including the exploitation of lithium.

“The imminent accession of the United Kingdom to the trans-Pacific partnership that includes Mexico, Peru and Chile is a positive step, and we hope that Costa Rica, Ecuador and Uruguay will join us soon. The collaboration between Latin America and the United Kingdom can make a difference not only for our security and prosperity, but for the entire world,” the authority concluded.

Let us remember that, at the end of March, the member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP11) agreed to accept the accession of the United Kingdom.
