DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A “possible explosion” has affected a major shipping route near the Yemeni coast, the British military said Sunday.
The British Maritime Commercial Operations Office (UKMTO), under the British Army, issued a brief warning to sailors regarding an incident in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that separates East Africa from the Arabian Peninsula.
Drone activity was also reported in the area, the UKMTO said.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The area has seen a series of attacks in recent weeks attributed to Yemeni Houthi rebels, who have Iranian support and have also launched missiles and drones towards Israel for its war once morest Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis did not mention the incident at first.
