British Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, National Army Museum official Julian Fernandes said: ‘The British Army has traditionally followed the prevailing fashion. Beards were allowed in the army until the beginning of the seventeenth century.

“Soldiers used to have beards during the English Wars, but by the beginning of the Eighth President the beard was thrown out of army fashion and then it never came back out of necessity.”
