The School of Terror.
Developed by Softstar, The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation is the video game adaptation of the 2020 film of the same name. person in which we will follow the adventures of a group of university students who want to fight once morest an urban legend that surrounds the campus. Challenge an urban legend regarding a ghost in the middle of the night? What might possibly go wrong? Let’s say it all, actually. We are at Tunghu University, in Taiwan, where a group of 6 students, made up of 3 girls and 3 boys, decides to reenact a ritual on a bridge in order to film the whole thing and publish it on the net . This ritual will awaken the ghost of a young woman who will haunt them for the duration of the game. In each chapter, we will see different horrors through the eyes of all the protagonists, discovering more and more of the campus’ past, the legend and the characters themselves. There are no selectable characters, but each chapter starts with a different character, which will cause the story to intertwine between all the protagonists. The plot, although linear, is very complex, since to find out what is happening we will have to collect various collectibles such as books, newspaper articles, photos and letters. Only then will we know more regarding the mystery that surrounds the campus. The bridge, hence the title The Bridge Curse, is not the only setting in the game. It will be possible to visit the entire campus, classrooms, dormitories and many other things, but to guided way. Unfortunately, this is not an open map game, where you can roam freely, but where you must follow certain predetermined paths to advance in the plot.

The graphical rendering of the scenery is excellent on the PlayStation 5, while on the Playstation 4, some textures loaded late or were missing. The lighting is well done, with lighting effects ranging from greenish, in the style of The Ring, to reddish as the story progresses, which builds tension throughout the game from start to finish. the end. As for the characters, graphically they are not bad, they are even well done – we are still talking regarding an indie game – and fit well into the setting. Ghosts, on the other hand, are graphic killers, in the truest sense of the word. We really liked the design of the ghostly creatures, which make the experience more and more terrifying. The English dub is quite successful, but there are some sound issues during the overlapping dialogue. Luckily, this only happened a few times and didn’t detract from the gaming experience. On the other hand, the ambient sound and ghosting sound are excellent. With a really scary helmet!

A gameplay that is already familiar to us.
Been to Outlast? Here, The Bridge Curse has pretty much the same gameplay. We have no way to challenge a ghost and the only solution is to run or hide. We can hide in lockers or under tables, but we must be careful not to be seen, otherwise our cover will be destroyed and we will be spotted by the ghost who will kill us instantly. There are no quick events to escape the grip of the ghost. Once caught, it’s Game Over. This can make the gameplay experience frustrating, as you have to restart the same section of the game multiple times to figure out where to go. There is no map in the game and to reach the destination we must read the signs that we find scattered around the campus. We can also check the cell phone to see our target. Cell phone isn’t very useful, see it more like your inventory to see collectibles or available items, but it doesn’t have any other functions apart from these. The Bridge Curse also has a good dose of puzzles, nothing very complicated of course, but which we appreciated because they break the routine of the game by moving from a breathtaking situation to another calmer, almost relaxing if I dare say .

Finally, there are far too many jumpscare, some phoned, others less. One may or may not like being spooked in this way, but some are quite phoney, falling into several clichés of the genre. “Oh no a sudden zoom in on a door, what the hell might happen?” or a chair that falls by itself, we are in these levels there. To add a note regarding the duration of the game. It takes between 3 and 5 hours to complete, which also depends on how long you get stuck in a section. Also, the gameplay is not very high, in fact it is practically absent. Once the game is over, there’s nothing to do but close the game and uninstall it, but let’s just say that’s normal for linear cutscenes like this. Note that the developers are already working on the second chapter, The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication.

VERDICT
The Bridge Curse is a game that does not innovate in any way, either in terms of gameplay or cinematic narration, but for an independent production, it remains of a very high standard. If you’re a fan of the Outlast series, this is an obvious recommendation, but if you prefer less passive horror where the goal is just to escape and follow the plot, you might not like it.
