The Brabant Killers: Uncovering the Truth Behind the Forest Prison Assault and Unsolved Crimes

2023-08-09 07:20:00

In the visiting room of the Forest prison, at the beginning of October 1982, Bruno Vandeuren revealed to the lawyer Delhuvenne his participation “as a driver” in the attack on the Dekaise armory on September 30, 82 in Wavre, fifth of the 20 facts attributed to the Killers of Brabant.

The former lawyer, whom we find, affirms that Vandeuren gave him three names, including that of the chief in the first period of the Killings. For Etienne Delhuvenne, it is the track that must be taken up and digged. That of P., a Brussels resident still alive.

Crime in Ostend

If he confided in his lawyer, Bruno Vandeuren denied it to the investigators. “What else might he do?”

Vandeuren had an alibi: the morning of the Wavre heist, he was in bed, sleeping in with a certain Nadine who might confirm. For Delhuvenne, an “alibi of convenience”.

Proof of this is, according to the lawyer, that Vandeuren boasted to others than him, at least seven people, including a colleague, of having participated in the fact of Wavre.

But the badly handled investigation would have been distorted. An investigator from the Brussels BSR has/would have falsified the report of his hearing, which “will be recognized later by a colleague of his, Warrant Officer Charles T., author of the book:” I was a victim of protections ” .

If there are gray areas, it is wrong to say that the investigators neglected the Vandeuren track. Bruno Vandeuren spent days in the rue de Louvain, in the offices of Warrant Officer Goffinon, who was not easy and still got nowhere.

The years passed. On December 24, 1988, Vandeuren was found dead in a park in Ostend. He was in contact shortly before with the deputy Coveliers who wanted him to appear before the Parliamentary Commission on the Brabant killings.

Nadine, not found

Vandeuren was killed at a time when investigators were refocusing on him. Judges Schlicker then Jean-Claude Lacroix in Charleroi had doubts. They wanted to recheck the alibi but the key witness, Nadine, who had gone to Guadeloupe, might not be found.

There have been many questions regarding the assassination which, if there were suspects, was ultimately never clarified either. Questions remained unanswered.

After the attack on the Dekaise armory, the perpetrators abandoned the escape vehicle, the VW Santana, in the Brugstraat in Hoeilaart near the Sonian forest. Vandeuren had the time to reach the offices of Jean-Luc Piavaux in Uccle. Piavaux who can no longer be questioned. He also died, in the Seychelles or in Kinshasa depending on the version. Another case shrouded in shadow.

According to Delhuvenne, Vandeuren designated P. as the one who led the band at its beginnings. The two had known each other since adolescence, both having been placed as minors at the IPPJ in Wauthier-Braine.

Wauthier-Braine? It’s just a detail, but “Wauthier-Braine” was written by hand on a notebook sheet found in the Sonian forest, following the attack on Wavre, near Dr Derscheid’s clinic.

Links according to Delhuvenne

And now, on May 6, 2023, the DH published the testimony of a motorist, Joost V., who said he saw a car, perhaps that of the perpetrators of the killing at Delhaize in Aalst, on the evening of the events, in a specific place on the road to Quenast, in Bierghes.

Starting from the address, Etienne Delhuvenne searched various archives (cadastre, register of companies, Belgian Monitor). He claims to have found elements which, according to him, make/would make the link with P. Impossible for us to say more. He keeps these elements available to the investigators.

Similarly, Delhuvenne claims to have found links that refer to Maurice Douillet, mysteriously murdered in Ittre in February 84 (DH June 22, 2023), not far from the place where the Brabant killers were going to abandon various objects in the canal in 1985. For Delhuvenne, who put his research on paper, everything would be linked.

A questioning decision

But in February 2020, a justice of the peace considered that Me Delhuvenne “suffers from a delusion of persecution”. The judge declared him “incapable” and placed him under guardianship. The assets of Patrick Haemers’ former lawyer are now managed by a property manager.

What challenges is that since then, a doctor has examined Me Delhuvenne and issued diametrically opposed conclusions. On May 12, 2023, this specialist estimated that “the cognitive capacities (of Étienne Delhuvenne) are completely preserved, his verbal and non-verbal reasoning efficient, his judgment not altered”.

The doctor concluded: “From the many conversations we had with the subject, declared once morest his will ‘under administration’, we can fully confirm the positive results of all the tests carried out, and therefore the completeness of the mental and intellectual capacities of the subject. . “.

It’s clear. The doctor certifies that Etienne Delhuvenne holds “powerful reasoning”.

Delhuvenne, who is only 71 years old, is nevertheless placed under guardianship, and that is what raises questions.

Asked regarding it, Etienne Delhuvenne replied: “An arbitrary decision was taken with regard to me, without even having appointed an expert, marred by procedural errors, and therefore contrary to the law, and I was thus stripped of all my assets. I was removed from civilian life”.
