the Boston Marathon opens a category… for non-binaries

Small earthquake around the next edition of one of the most emblematic foot races. Non-binary athletes wishing to participate in the Boston Marathon in the United States next year will not have to choose between the male or female categories but will be able to tick a specific box, race organizers announced this week. one of the six most prestigious in the category.

“The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) is currently working on expanding opportunities for non-binary athletes at our events, including the 2023 marathon”they detail in a press release.

No “qualification criteria” yet

“Although we don’t currently have qualification criteria for non-binary athletes, we are working on ways to integrate them into this event”, they add, stressing that the data are still insufficient to set minima. In the future, and as we have times achieved by athletes registered in the non-binary category, it will be possible to set minimums, specifies the BAA. “We see this first experience as an opportunity for all of us to learn and grow”.

Registration for the 127th edition of the Boston Marathon began on Monday, September 12. A box “non-binary” appear on the forms. Some 30,000 athletes are expected at the start of the race, scheduled for April 17.
