Stefan Hartung, managing director of the German engineering group Bosch, a major supplier to the automotive sector, believes that vehicles equipped with combustion engines will be needed for at least 35 years before the electrification of road transport might be completed, writes DPA . Finally, certain categories of vehicles will not be able to be electrified, and combustion engine technology will have to be produced further.

If the entire annual world production of 90 million road vehicles were converted immediately, it would take 16 years to electrify the entire world fleet of 1.4 billion vehicles, Stefan Hartung pointed out in an interview published on Sunday on the portal The Pioneer.

But in reality, internal combustion engines will continue to be produced, and they will eventually have to be replaced.

“It will take twice as long, at least 30 to 35 years, to electrify all automobiles worldwide,” Hartung said.

The Bosch CEO added that eventually certain categories of vehicles will not be able to be electrified and the combustion engine technology will still have to be produced in Germany. “You can’t force customers outside of Europe not to use it,” Hartung said.

He emphasized that the innovations needed do not exist yet, giving agricultural vehicles as an example. An agricultural combine has to operate up to 12 hours a day, and consumes 250 to 300 kilowatts per hour. “Given the batteries that would be required for such a performance, the vehicle would most likely go into the ground,” Hartung said.

However, Hartung refuted the idea that the European Union moved far too quickly when it set a target for phasing out cars equipped with combustion engines. “Regarding the climate goals, it was important first of all to set a target,” said Hartung.

The Bosch Group is a global leader in the provision of technologies and services, present for 30 years and in Romania, through six entities where, on December 31, 2022, approximately 9,830 employees worked. In addition, in Bucharest, there is also a branch of BSH Hausgerate GmbH, active on the home appliances market. (Source: Agerpres / Photo: Dreamstime.com)
