“If the victims had been wearing their clothes properly, this wouldn’t have happened, but the buttons were left open and only the nipples were covered, and the breasts were protruding, which made me think.”

There was no reflection even once. Even though he murdered four men and women out of misguided lust, he blamed the victims the entire time. When he was sentenced to death, he blamed the system. When the Constitutional Court ruled that the death penalty was constitutional, they said it was unfair.

“Actually, my only crime is that I asked for a ride on a boat, took it on a boat, and then failed to report the missing person.”

During my 17 years in prison, no one came to visit me. His wife, two daughters, and five sons all turned once morest him. The eldest child committed suicide the year following the murder, saying, “I mightn’t bear the shame.” His wife left the neighborhood where she had lived for nearly 60 years, and the neighborhood was given the stigma of being a ‘criminal village.’

This is the story of Oh Jong-geun (85), the person responsible for the so-called ‘Boseong Fisherman Murder Case’.

Serial killer Oh Jong-geun made a living at the sea his entire life. He was an uneducated person who did not even finish elementary school. From the age of ten, he lived as a fisherman catching octopus. Although he was small at 165cm tall, he had been working on a ship for a long time and was strong even when he was over 60 lines tall. In the verdict of Oh Jong-geun, who killed four young people at the age of 69, there is a passage that says, “He can do with his bare hands what young people do with mechanical equipment,” and “his strength is as strong as that of younger people.”

There was also a wife and children. He met his wife in 1959 when he was 21, and they had two sons and five daughters. His family was relatively harmonious. Neighbors’ evaluation of Oh Jong-geun was not positive.

“Everyone in the market likes you. “Because you’re gentle, man.”

“He’s skinny and small, so he has a gentle spirit. “It looks very gentle.”

“He said that? “I still can’t imagine it.”

Neighbors remembered him as a village roadman with a stubborn but quiet appearance and a simple appearance. This is why the shock was greater following the crime became known. However, one neighbor commented on his usual behavior:

“It was okay, except for the fact that the man was good at ‘gaksijil’ (Jeonnam dialect referring to sex with a woman outside of marriage in a disparaging way).”

Could it be that he was a person who was unable to control his sexual desires until he was well past his 60th birthday? During the police investigation, he stated to the effect that ‘since 2006, as I got older, I have not had sexual relations with my wife.’ The following year, Oh Jong-geun turned into a serial killer who killed four people in one month. Coincidentally, the driving force behind it all was ‘sexual desire’.

Looking at the 1st to 3rd trial verdicts and the police and prosecution investigation records, there are aspects of death row inmate Oh Jong-geun’s crimes that are difficult to understand. This is because only Oh Jong-geun can know the truth of the crime committed in the open sea. If we reconstruct that time, it is like this.

On October 2, 2007, Oh Jong-geun is conducting an on-site inspection in front of police officers. He silently reenacted the process of meeting the victims at the dock and putting them on his boat, following the instructions of his police officer. /yunhap news

“Grandpa, we’ve never been on a boat before, but can you take us on a ride just once?”

August 31, 2007 was the day the ‘small and thin 69-year-old fisherman’ committed his first murder. The victims were Kim and Chu, a 19-year-old college student couple who approached Oh Jong-geun as he was preparing to depart from Uam dock in front of Dongyul-ri, Hoecheon-myeon.

Oh Jong-geun generously took the two on board and drove the boat to Deukryang Bay. This is where his octopus fishing farm is located.

By the time he arrived at the fishing grounds, Oh Jong-geun saw Mr. Chu sitting on the deck and suddenly felt a sexual desire. He said he thought, ‘I want to touch my breasts.’ He decided to kill his boyfriend first, as he thought he would get in the way. He walked up behind Mr. Kim, who was sitting next to Mr. Chu and was admiring the sea, and pushed his back.

Mr. Kim struggled and tried to get back on the boat, but Oh Jong-geun stabbed, hit, and pushed him away with a 2m long pole with a hook. It was a common name for ‘satgatdae’ used when pulling up a net or a large fish. Mr. Kim’s entire body was covered in blood and he drifted away. Oh Jong-geun turned his head towards Mr. Chu, who was left alone and shaking. He walked over, stretched out his hand and said, “Miss, let’s get some breasts done.”

Mr. Chu shook off and resisted. Seung-gang continued, and Oh Jeong-geun even pushed Mr. Chu into the sea, saying, “Let’s die together.” After her fall, her Chu held on by holding on to the gunwales, but her Oh Jong-geun pushed her into the sea with the same implement that had struck her Kim.

Mr. Chu attempted to call 911 four times in 5 minutes starting at 6:26 PM before falling into the sea. Among them, in the fourth 119 call recording file, Oh Jong-geun’s voice using Jeolla-do dialect is briefly heard along with the sound of a boat and the sea. It’s just 1.2 seconds.

“Where are you coming from?”

After the crime was over and the sun was setting and it was getting dark, he returned to the dock. He did not go out on land that day, but slept in the boat. When he woke up the next day, he cleaned up the fishing gear used to catch octopus and took the bus home. He lived his daily life as if nothing had happened.

Three days later, Mr. Chu’s body was discovered in the sea off Goheung, next to Boseong. Two days later, the body of her boyfriend, Kim, surfaced at a dock in Deukryang-myeon, Boseong-gun. Mr. Kim’s body was particularly badly damaged.

Fractures of the left shoulder blade, left humerus, tibia near both ankles, and left fibula

Extensive skin abrasions, tears, tears, and bruises all over the body, including arms, legs, and head.

However, initially the police did not suspect murder. It was thought that there was a high possibility of death by accident or suicide. So, Oh Jong-geun continued his work as usual, but 20 days later, he committed another ‘murder on board’ in the same manner.

September 25th of that year. Mr. Jo (24 years old at the time of death) and Mr. An (23 years old at the time of death), who traveled to Boseong for Chuseok, were curious regarding the sea seen from the boat. I went looking for a boat to take me on, but since it was a holiday, there were few boats operating. A ship departing from port caught my eye. After all, it was Oh Jong-geun’s ship.

“I want to see the sea.”

Crimes that were not condemned were re-enacted in the same way.

Oh Jong-geun refused several times, but then pretended not to be able to win and accepted the request. “Well, not her, she’s just waiting around on the dock over there. “I’m going to go pick it up.” The dock he pointed to was a remote place with few people. The purpose was to minimize witnesses. Unlike the previous time, he decided to commit the crime even before burning the victims.

The two boarded the country fisherman’s boat without much suspicion. The place where the ship stopped was Deukryang Bay. It is the same place where a male and female college student was murdered regarding 20 days ago. Why did you choose this place once more? Profiler Pyo Chang-won defined the nature of the place as follows in a broadcast.

“The only space in my life where I can control and dominate everything and express my emotions to my heart’s content.”

After working on the boat for regarding 3 hours, his sexual desire arose within him once more. She began to glance at Ahn’s breasts, and Ahn viscerally sensed her intention. She sent a text message outside asking for help.

‘This is the person who lent us the phone earlier. I think I got trapped while riding a boat. Please call a police boat.’

However, no one might stop Oh Jong-geun. As he approached Ms. Ahn, he said to her face, as he did then, that he wanted to touch her breasts. The good fisherman I saw on land was gone at that moment.

“Miss, I haven’t been able to have sex since last year. Can I touch your breasts?”

/SBS

Mr. Ahn resisted by striking away the outstretched hand, and Mr. Cho stopped him by grabbing Oh Jong-geun’s torso. Oh Jong-geun slapped Ahn on the bottom of her ship and threw her into the sea. Mr. Cho also strangled her, knocked her down, and then pushed her into the sea.

In the process, Oh Jong-geun also fell into the water. However, the fisherman, who was familiar with sailing, got on the boat right away. Mr. Cho was swept away by the current and soon disappeared. Ms. Ahn tried to get back on the boat, but she might not overcome the ‘satgat’. A few days later, two bodies were found in the sea off Boseong.

Even then, Oh Jong-geun remained calm. He collected octopus, cleaned up the fishing gear, and returned to the dock. He lived a daily life. He approached the neighbors who were resting on a flat near the dock, showed a octopus and said this. This is a statement that ‘exempts the eye’ from witnesses who may have been present.

“Because it was Chuseok, I thought it would be sold at a high price, so I went to work. “I’m seventy years old and can’t even stand up. How can I take two women with me?”

However, the next day, Oh Jong-geun was arrested by the police. A rescue request text message that Ahn, who had noticed a suspicious atmosphere, sent to the outside before being attacked by Oh Jong-geun served as a clue. The victims’ credit cards, ballpoint pens, and dozens of strands of hair that appeared to belong to women were found in Oh Jong-geun’s stomach.

Oh Jong-geun initially denied the charges. “Mr. Ahn slipped and fell into the sea while moving from the stern to the bow to urinate, and Mr. Cho tried to catch him and fell into the sea with him.” He said it was a safety accident, not a murder.

The police questioned the inconsistencies in the statements, citing evidence from the ship and autopsy findings on the victims’ bodies. Oh Jong-geun eventually admitted to the crime. On August 31, he confessed that the incident was his own doing. But there was no reflection.

“I am so lucky to die.”

“My arms are like that.”

“The victims were not lucky.”

“I guess we were born as eight people to kill and kill each other.”

He even said, “If the victims had been wearing their clothes properly, this wouldn’t have happened,” and “The buttons were left open and only the nipples were covered, and the breasts were protruding, which made me think that was the case.” The motive for the murder was attributed to luck or fate, and the responsibility was shifted to the victim.

The first trial sentenced him to death. The court said, “He brutally killed four men and women on his boat on two occasions to satisfy his sexual desires, and denied the crime following being arrested. There is a risk of reoffending, so there is a need to permanently isolate him from society.” Oh Jong-geun, who submitted a statement of remorse only the day before the sentencing, appealed immediately following the death penalty was announced.

Oh Jong-geun changed his trial strategy while appealing. He misrepresented the facts and complained regarding emotions. However, a diversionary operation was launched to avoid his execution.

They reversed their previous statement and brought up once more the claim that it was a ‘safety accident’. Rather than killing them, it should be seen as a failure to save the drowning victims. He claimed that he was drunk at the time of the crime and also claimed mental and physical impairment.

Citing his unfortunate family history, he also said, “I was born as the child of a concubine.” She complained that following her biological mother died, she grew up in sorrow, being discriminated once morest in her family as her half-child. She also claimed that she was physically weak due to her old age.

They also questioned whether the death penalty was unconstitutional. He said that the system “violates basic human rights and dignity.” The request for a review of the unconstitutionality of the law was accepted, but in February 2010, the Constitutional Court ruled that it was constitutional with the opinions of 5 out of 9 judges.

Chosun Ilbo reporter Han Kyung-jin personally visited him while he was in prison following the Constitutional Court’s decision. At the time, when a reporter told him that ‘the decision was made to be constitutional,’ he reportedly said this with bloodshot eyes filled with tears. “What is constitutional?”

The appeals court did not accept all of Oh Jong-geun’s claims of ‘misconception of facts’, ‘mental and physical disorder’, and ‘unfair sentencing’. The Supreme Court also dismissed Oh Jong-geun’s appeal and confirmed the death sentence.

“In light of the fact that they are causing greater harm to the victims and their families by irresponsibly making empty excuses while ignoring sincere repentance or minimal damage recovery, we need to make improvements to help them return to a healthy social life in the future. “It is difficult to find possibilities for edification.”

Oh Jong-geun is the oldest inmate on death row in Korea. He is 85 years old this year. If you add up exactly how many years the four young men he killed lived, you get your age. Oh Jong-geun is said to have been healthy without any chronic diseases until recently. Oh Jong-geun says he still feels unfair.
