A civic group accused Yoon Seok-yeol of pointing out Lee Jae-myung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, as the main body of the Daejang-dong incident in a media interview during his presidential campaign, but the police decided not to hand him over to the prosecution.
The anti-corruption and public crime investigation team of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency concluded the case, believing that the charges might not be applied to President Yoon, who was accused of publicly false information under the Public Official Election Act.
The police judged that it is difficult to see that President Yoon made up false information to win the election, as he only revealed his thoughts and arguments during an interview with the media.
Earlier, in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo on February 7, President Yoon said, “I wonder if Yoo Dong-gyu has done everything if the prosecutors with the right mind are investigating the ‘Daejang-dong case’. The person who was able to do it (at the time of Lee Jae-myung) was the mayor of Seongnam.”
President Yoon also insisted, “Those who commit illegality and corruption under the Moon Jae-in regime should be punished according to the law and according to the system.”
In response, Shin Seung-mok, the head of the People’s Solidarity for Anti-Corruption and Anti-Corruption, filed a complaint with the National Investigation Headquarters, saying, “Youn said false information in order to prevent Lee from being elected.”
