He Public Prosecutor’s Office of Panama (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) reported this Saturday that its team of investigators has completed the removal and recovery of 10 bodies of migrants who drowned due to the flooding of a river in a region of the Panamanian Caribbean, near the border with Colombia.
“The Ombudsman’s Office (which exercises the functions of the MP) of the Guna Yala Region concluded the proceedings for the removal of 10 presumed migrants who died by drowning in Carreto,” the Prosecutor’s Office indicated on the social network X.
Ten migrants drowned, according to SENANPanama
In the same statement, the Public Prosecutor’s Office specifies that “so far, this is the number of victims recovered after three days of operations together with @senafrontpanama and @SENANPanama” (the National Border Service and the National Aeronaval Service).
It should be noted that on Thursday of this week, the President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, had announced in his weekly press conference that “the number is 16” in reference to the deceased migrants. However, later, sources from the Presidency clarified to EFE that the death toll remains at “10”, as had been reported on Wednesday.
Panamanian security forces reported a day earlier that 10 migrants “drowned” a few days ago in a region of the Panamanian Caribbean, where they had arrived from Colombia, using a shorter route through the Darien jungle on their migratory journey to North America.
The information comes from the testimonies of residents of the Carreto community, who stated that these migrants had been buried near the town. In addition, local press reports indicate that the incident occurred on Monday, July 15.
The National Border Service (Senafront) suggested that these bodies could have been “buried to cover up their criminal links to migrant trafficking.”
