“The Blue Leather Chair: The Superstitious Story Behind the Spurs’ NBA Draft Lottery Win and the Quest for Victor Wembanyama”

Before the NBA Draft Lottery last Tuesday, the Spurs crossed their fingers very hard to recover the first choice and thus win the right to draft the French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama. The San Antonio franchise ended up hitting the jackpot, and maybe it’s thanks to President RC Buford’s blue chair.

When you have the opportunity to pick up “the greatest prospect in the history of basketball”, you have the best chance in your favor, whether you are superstitious or not.

Superstitious, obviously the Spurs are very superstitious in view of the last anecdote shared by Zach Lowe on his podcast The Lowe Post. L’insider d’ESPN was in Chicago for the Lottery on Tuesday and told this story like no other. This is the story of a blue leather chairwho made the trip to the Windy City for the long-awaited event.

“After the Lottery, I saw RC Buford and thought I had to say hi. I asked him the stupidest question possible, the only question: did you have a flashback of the Tim Duncan Lottery in 1997? I was expecting a classic Spurs-style response like ‘We’re very lucky, we’re going to be able to develop another great player’ and so on.

And in fact RC looked at me, and answered me while laughing: ‘You’re damn right. Let me tell you this story: I was sitting in my office when we won the 1997 Lottery, in a blue leather chair. It’s my lucky chair. I gave it to my daughter when she went to college a few years ago. Tuesday, around 3 p.m., I arrived at my hotel room in Chicago, I open the door, and this same chair is in the room! With an accompanying card, because it was my birthday.’

At that point, the Lottery gods said, you know what, you put in the effort, he (Wemby, Ed.) is going to Spurs.”

The rest, we know it: 26 years following Tim Duncan, the Spurs once once more won the Lottery and the right to select another generational prospect for the Draft in Victor Wembanyama.

For all the hype surrounding Wemby, no one knows if Victor will have as lavish a career as Timmy, Hall of Famer five-time NBA champion, three-time Finals MVP and two-time Season MVP. What is certain, however, is that this blue leather chair deserves – as Zach Lowe puts it – its “own private room” in the Spurs arena or at the franchise’s training center.
